Amazon.co.uk Review:
This hit-and-miss 1988 comedy pairs John Candy and Dan Aykroyd in a story of one family's summer vacation all but ruined by the uninvited appearance of another, more loutish family. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directs from a half-hearted John Hughes script, which reduces Hughes's jokes-and-epiphanies formula (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) to true gaudiness. On the other hand, Annette Bening makes her screen debut here. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, trailer, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

- A play-it-safe kind of comedy
You pretty much know that any film featuring both John Candy and Dan Aykroyd is going to generate some laughs, making The Great Outdoors a pretty safe bet for anyone in the mood for a little comedy - and comedy is basically all you should expect here (any film that supplies subtitles for raccoon conversations isn't really trying to express anything meaningful), despite the fact that John Hughes wrote the script. - Long Live The King Of Movie Comedy
From the opening scene of the family driving to there destination to the closing scenes of the proclamation, "BIG BEAR CHASE ME", this film will have you in stitches from start to finish!
John Candy (Comedy God), stars in this fun film for all the family.
I belive any movie that stared Candy is pretty damn good, but this film is made even funnier by the arrival of Dan Akroyd, who plays Candys'uninvited rich, arrogant brother-in-law, who is always trying to get one up on everyone.

- The Great Outdoors
This is an excellent film and not given enough due credit. John Candy teams up with his brother Dan Ackroyd on a family holiday to the lakes. Things go wrong and they end up on a bear hunt. This film is superb, and if you have seen planes, trains and automobiles and liked it, this film is definalty for you! and as much as my mate thinks that JOHN BELUSHI is in this film, he is not (nick!)
why dont they make films like this one anymore! andy
