Amazon.co.uk Review:
This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can out-shoot and out-sing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honour, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. Calamity Jane won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love", by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

- One of the best musicals ever!
My mum bought this film for me along with My Fair Lady and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers when i had been intrested in theatre and musicals for a while. Now, don't get me wrong the other two are amazing, but this is just top-notch! Along with The Sound Of Music, this is not only my favourite musical, but also my favourite film of all time! It's just a classic, and they never go out of date. Even though i wasn't alive when this first came out, i love it all the same. And Allyn McLerie gives a good ... Read More

- My 12 year old loved it
I saw this years ago and forgot how brilliant it is in a feel good kind of way. As a former tom boy I can't help but relate to 'Clam' and was pleasently surprised that my daughter and her friend watched it all the way through and she asked to watch it again the next day. Only downside is that I can't stop singing the tunes in my head and sometimes outload much to my family's embarressment.

- i love doris day
i do have an embarassing soft spot for doris day, she always cheers me up when i feel down and ive seen nearly all her films, i think this is a great film to watch and sing along to , 'windy city' is my favourite song on this film, i always get up and sing along, i hope you do too!!!

- A MUST!!!!
One of my favourite films EVER, if not my favourite. It compares the care-free western country life with the busy bustle of Chicago. The songs are great, the plot genius and the script hilarious. Add this to Doris Day and a touch of romance, it makes a film to watch again and again(I have watched it four times but could still watch it again and again!) A MUST!!!!!!!

- If you dont like this - you need to be on the next stage coach out of town !?
It is so hard to believe this film was made in 1953 !? It has a timeless quality and no matter how many times you watch it (thanks to fresh as a daisy Doris) this film never feels old.
The colour, life and sheer dynamism of Doris in the role takes your breath away - she IS Calamity Jane. Doris was born to play this title role. She is sassy, self-assured, cocky and confident. It almost seems a shame that she needs a man to make her 'complete', but the evolution of her character from Tom ... Read More
