Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
The Big Lebowski, a casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen brothers (Ethan and Joel), seems like a bit of a lark and the result was a box-office disappointment. It's lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hair-netted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins?

The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Much overhyped Coen brothers comedy that feels like a bumpy ride
'The Big Lebowski' has been dubbed a 'cult' movie and with reason. It is a movie for a very specific clientele and one that is likely to disappoint a more mainstream audience.

First of all, it is not THAT funny. It definitely has its good moments thank to the script and the more than able cast. But don't be fooled: those moments are the exception and not the norm.

The movie seems to be too pleased with itself and it certainly falls short of the comic brilliance of 'Fargo'. ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not great
I've given The Big Lebowski a 2 star rating, as I've seen worse. I like/love a lot of the Coen brothers' films but this didn't do it for me. The cast was good, it was original, it was weird but it felt like someone else's daydream in the end. Disappointing on the whole.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Dude Abides
I was going to try to write a fair and balanced review, free from hyperbole and gushing praise for this film. The problem is I love this film. A lot. I'm wearing my Dude t-shirt as I write. So I'll dispense with any attempt to create a critical and objective response.

How to describe The Big Lebowski? Well, it's a comedy mixed with a Marlowe-esque detective story. One seen through a fug of weed smoke and set to a soundtrack of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The main character, an ageing ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - aww man what a cool drama Dude
Jeff Bridges (The fabulous baker boys) stars as the Dude Lebowski, who is mistaken for another Lebowski, which ultimately leaves his rug ruined.

Taking this up with the Big Lebowski, the Dude is sent on a mission to recover his kidnapped wife.

The Big Lebowski is one of the Coen brother's finest creations by being different, funny and entertaining all the way through with smart direction and acting.

You will have never seen anything like this before as Jeff Bridges ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Must Have Seen it 50 Times
The genius of the Cohen brothers is not always appreciated and when I sing their praises am often thought to be quite mad. The content is so rich that every time I see it I find something new, the person bowling in the poster on the wall of his sitting room is Richard Nixon for example. They are creating art and because they are pure artists I am not crazy about everything they have made. The Big Lebowski and Miller's Crossing are perfection in my eyes, if you don't feel the same watch their other films and ... Read More
