'The Alchemist's Secret' by Scott Mariani is an gripping, well written thriller. Some components of the story are familiar - codes and secret knowledge, religious fanatics including one with a penchant for torture, a questing hero with a intelligent female companion and stroppy French police officer doggedly trailing them - but it's all put together in a fresh and interesting way.

An enjoyable, fast-paced thriller that I read in one session - it's definitely a page-turner. The characters are well-rounded and believable, and I look forward to meeting up with the interestingly tortured and very attractive hero, Ben Hope, in the next novel!

I purchased this book by chance as I had never heard of Scott Mariani and usually prefer authors I know of psychological thrillers such as Minette Walters, Val McDermid and Nicci French.
