Amazon.com Review:
In the 1980s and again in the '90s, James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner published The Leadership Challenge to address issues they uncovered in research on ordinary people achieving "individual leadership standards of excellence." The keys they identified--model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, encourage the heart--have now been reexamined in the context of the post-millennium world and updated in a third edition. "What we have discovered, and rediscovered, is that leadership is not the private reserve of a few charismatic men and women," write Kouzes, chairman emeritus of the Tom Peters Company, and Posner, dean of the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. "People make extraordinary things happen by liberating the leader within everyone." After explaining their concept and methodology, the authors detail the five essentials noted above in a pair of chapters apiece that bring clarity to their theories with case studies and recommended actions. The specificity of each (motivating through "the meaningfulness of the challenge, not the material rewards of success," for example, and being able to "accept the mistakes that result from experimentation") is enhanced by advice on sustaining the commitment and making leadership skills accessible to all. The results remain as relevant as when they were first published. --Howard Rothman
Product Description:
This unique leadership development program is for the young adult who aspires to be an exemplary leader. From the college classroom to the local youth club, the Student Leadership Practices Inventory has helped thousands of young people assess their leadership potential and improve their skills. Drawing from years of impeccable research and real-world experience, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have developed four practical resources that can be used alone or in a workshop setting: the Self, the Observer, the Student Workbook, and the Facilitator's Guide.
Both the Self and Observer are questionnaires for the student leader and the person who has observed the student in action. Each survey features thirty statements based on five important leadership practices: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart. To score their results, participants will find in the Student Workbook grids for recording scores, charts for interpreting scores, and worksheets for summarizing and planning action steps.
For those who need guidance in designing and conducting a student leadership program, there is the Facilitator's Guide. In addition to detailed instructions and examples, workshop leaders will find masters for overhead transparencies and handouts, checklists for meeting the leadership challenge, normative data on different types of student leaders, and instructions for obtaining computerized scoring software.

- Great points lost in a black-hole
The principles outlined in this book are positive, however, they are lost in excessive narrative. The text drags on and on about the 5 areas. You read one insightful sentence and its followed by 6 pages of stories that attempt to affirm the original point. The actionable material that others speak of include; find your voice, envision the future, seek innovative ways to change, build trust, celebrate values. All good stuff--don't get me wrong here, I just ask, "Where's the beef?" Could have ... Read More

- Great Leadership Book
My coworker recommended this book to me, and it's one of the best leadership/management books I've ever read. There's great practical advice and teaches you how to treat your staff, coworkers, managers like human beings while still being an effective leader. I highly recommend this book for people entering the work force and first-time managers or managers who need a new perspective.
Rating:
- Leadership in Business
I gave this book four stars because it is well written and very readable, but it is really designed for people interested in business and working in corporations; something I did not realize before I started. I feel like the chapters were a little wordy, but the "summaries" at the end of the chapter are nice.

- Excellent Book Review Comments
This is not only a good product, it has been dleivered in a timely and beneficial manner. In fact, I have both just added a second purchase of this book for one of my military friends, and have added it to my future "Gift List" for friends and relatives.
Rating:
- 10 pages of information stretched to 400
I am convinced that Jossey Bass will publish anything. I don't necessarily disagree with the material, however, it would make a better magazine article rather than a 400-page book. The authors go to an embarassing extreme in order to stretch the material out. See how I just used two sentences to make a single point? Annoying, right? This book uses pages and pages to illustrate rather pedestrian concepts. Ugggh!
