Product Description:
In this hilarious and insightful memoir twenty-five-year-old Rodney Rothman, burned out from his big-city life, decides to get a jumpstart on the golden years...four decades before his time. He retires and moves to South Florida and finds an elderly roommate, Leslie, a former piano teacher with cats. Rodney throws himself into the easy life, but soon finds that all the softball, shuffleboard, bingo, gambling cruises, canasta and tennis is, well, exhausting. After his newfound friends get over the oddity of a twenty-something retiree, he becomes one of them, though not without difficulty. He plays in a senior softball league and finds that most seventy-year-olds are far better athletes than he is. He plans a return to the stage for a reluctant ninety-two-year-old comedian. He finds himself the unwelcome muse and romantic interest of a seventy-seven-year-old femme fatale. And he becomes the last great hope of his shuffleboard team. But early retirement - the dream of so many - is not quite what he expected. "Early Bird" takes readers on a humorous, and often bittersweet, journey through the people and culture of retirement. With a deft comedic touch that evokes Bill Bryson or David Sedaris, Rodney Rothman takes you to where you're going after you get the golden watch.

- Interesting, Unique
This was an interesting insight into the world of retirement and elderly people. Rothman spends more than six months in a retirement community to get a feel for what retirement is like. The book made me feel empathetic towards the elderly, allowing me to glimpse life from a new perspective. I liked getting to know the cliques within the community as well as the individuals who formed the cliques. Rothman's writing style is casual, allowing for a personal account of the time spent in the retirement ... Read More

- Early Bird: great light reading!!
This was a great light read. I really enjoyed the humor and anecdotes of life as a twenty-something struggling to find some inspiration and direction. The author is the son of a family friend, and really hit the nail on the head with his description of south florida's retirement villages.
Rating:
- A ho hum tale of the Jewish after life
OK, I really meant to read 2008's Leisureville, but this was the only book in the library on retirement communities. I'm over 50, so I usually only read a book if it's free.
I wanted to scope out my options for the next decade. But even though Early Bird is non-fiction, it suffers from a dearth of information. It's really a bunch of essays about Rodney Rothman and how he is affected by the mostly Jewish mostly New York seniors around him, who treat him like a 28-year-old visiting son ... Read More

- I didn't finish
I didn't finish this memoir..I thought the idea behind the book was odd and it is just not worth my time and effort to read anymore of it.
Rating:
- Entertaining and Educational
Rodney retires at the age of 28 and moves to a 'community' in Florida. He learns about aging as well as the importance of youth.
I thought this book was at turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Rodney has an excellent comedic voice, honed while writing jokes for Letterman prior to his 'retirement.' I learned a lot while reading this book, but it didn't feel like learning. I would recommend this to anyone who reads for the same reason I do: To learn about lifestyles and events that are very different ... Read More
