I got my copy of this book right before it was put on the "banned book" list while I was in college and taking Children's Literature. I've loved the book and so have both of my daughters. I recently purchased it for my two year old granddaughter, and she loves it as much as both of my daughters and I. It has a sweet story and the pictures are amazing. Garth Williams puts so much expression on the rabbits' faces that you can't help but empathize with them. You can't go wrong with this book.

- Lovely, whimsical, beautiful subtext
I remember as a child loving this book because it must have had all the right ingredients: a little sorrow, joy, love and beautiful illustrations that took me into a wonderful world of imagination. That would have been in the early 70s - in the UK. Looking back I understand why this book came into my life - I was a biracial child. My mother is white Scottish and my father black Caribbean. - SWEET, BUT BORING
THIS REALLY IS A SWEET STORY, BUT THE PICTURES ALMOST ALL SEEM THE SAME. WOULD BE A GOOD BEDTIME STORY, BUT NOT SOMETHING I'D WANT TO READ MORE THAN TWICE.

I only saw a sweet, poignant book about the kind of love most people dream about. So the characters were rabbits. The analogies about love and marriage shot me straight in the heart and I bet most people would feel the same.I bought this and am now looking for a vintage ... - censorship
This is the book that opened my eyes to the censorship of books. Around 1960, this book was quite controversial and banned in some places. I had just started working in a library and went immediately to the book to see what the fuss was about.
Oh, yeah. It's a white bunny and a black bunny. I imagine the illustrator did this so you could tell one from the other in a black-and-white book; wouldn't it be confusing if they were both white or both black?
